Be Light 11-30-11

Wednesday, November 30:  John 1:1-5

When I first moved into my house nine years ago, it was so dark at night I kept running into one of the pillars between the kitchen and my bedroom.  After several stubbed toes and a lot of hollering, I decided I needed a source of light during those midnight trips for a drink of cold water.  As has usually been the case, I proceeded to evaluate and solve my problem.  That’s how I tend to operate.  I take care of myself and feel very accomplished and independent in doing so. For the first time in my adult life, I had a nightlight.

The only problem with the self-reliance mode of operation is that regardless of how capable I believe myself to be, I am stymied by situations that I must admit are beyond my control.  It is then that I chastise myself and always come to the same conclusion:  God is in charge.  He knows me intimately and knows what is best for my life.  I have to sit quietly, listen, and search for His light to direct my journey. I am secure in the knowledge that I have God’s help and attention because I am a Christian.  That God sent us His son to be the light of knowledge and love for the world is the most loving and miraculous gift we can imagine.

We sometimes lose ourselves amid the chaos of just living in a fallen world.  We wander in the darkness without hope until we recognize the One who is the light, the one who will reveal a path of hope and joy.  Each day should be one of recognition and rejoicing in the possibilities.
