Sunday, December 4—Isaiah 60:19-22: Everlasting Light
Christmas comes at a time of the year when it gets dark earlier and stays dark longer. Light, therefore, becomes even more important. In this passage, Isaiah uses the “sun,” “moon,” and “light” to make a spiritual point. The sun rises and sets. The moon waxes and wanes. The light we experience in the physical world changes. However, God is doing something new. He has a plan for us. The least of us will become more; the smallest will become mighty.
God, of course, doesn’t leave us unequipped to carry out this new plan. No longer are we to depend upon a sun or moon to give us true light. We are to depend upon God as our everlasting light. There is no change with Him.
Isaiah writes a great deal about the coming of the Messiah, who he will be, and what he will do. This messiah would be an everlasting, always-shining light who would end our days of sorrow and direct our paths in the right way. Christmas celebrates Jesus as this Light of the world! As we celebrate this Christmas season, let us never forget that His Everlasting Light is the source of all our hope and righteousness.
