Be Light 12-9-11

Friday, December 9—John 9:1-7

“Go… wash in the pool of Siloam,” He said.   Jesus could have healed the man with no questions asked, with nothing more than His touch, His words. Instead, Jesus asked the blind man to participate in this miracle.  What were those first few steps like for the blind man?  Was he running?  How anxious must he have been? I can imagine that the walk away from the pool of Siloam was much different than the walk to the pool for that man.  On the way to the pool he was in total darkness, trusting and hoping that something new was on the horizon.  I can just picture him splashing water up to his eyes, opening them slightly, and then quickly shutting them tightly because the light was too bright to take in all at once.  His understanding of light had been completely redefined—redefined by none other than Christ himself.   Jesus Christ, the Light of the World defended him, touched him, spoke to him.  He took the promise and hope in Jesus’ words to heart and walked blindly to that pool.  His obedience charted the path for him to walk away from that pool in a new light.

Father, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, may we be thankful for the special way that you chose to show us Your light.  May we be aware of the way that you defend us, touch us, and speak to us just as Christ did the blind man.  When you call us to walk blindly, let us remember that You have touched our eyes, and that when we act in obedience, we will walk away in a new light.  Let our definition of light be changed and sharpened by the unique ways that you speak purposefully into our lives and call us to participate in your story.
